Camera Recommendations Needed!

So I think it's high time I became a grown up and bought a real camera.  I have a point and shoot that's about 6 years old but once I got an iPhone I stopped using it. I'm pretty sure my iPhone camera is more advanced at this point.

Ive been using strictly the iPhone to take pictures of Miller and the family but I noticed last time I had some printed that the quality just isn't as good as I expected it to be.  I want to really be able to capture the good times and know I'm taking quality shots.

So I'm turning to you all for advice!!

Here is my disclaimer: I want to be able to take nice quality photos but I'm not looking to become a professional photographer. I don't want too many buttons or gadgets because I'm afraid I will just get lazy or not use it properly. I also want something that isn't too hard to carry around with me and can easily be pulled out to snap a few shots if we're out for the day.  I'm not sure this product exists so let me know if it does or doesn't!

I'm don't know if a point and shoot is the way to go or if I should look into the DSLRs.  I am willing to learn to use a DSLR if those are really best I just don't want anything overly complicated, if that makes sense.

Here are a few point and shoot and DSLR that have been suggested to me:

So chime in and let me know your recommendation!  Does anyone have experience with any of the above cameras?  Good or bad?  Does anyone have a good beginner camera?

Thanks in advance and thanks again to everyone who links up for Thoughts for Thursday!

  2. I love the canon one - because 1. it's not huge and 2. the range on the zoom and the clarity the picture takes is amazing!

  3. I'm as bad as you and use my iphone camera for everything. I've been begging for a nice camera, well that and new bedding, paint our house, get new porch furniture, clothes for fall, no wonder my husband won't take me seriously my list is never ending! Can't wait to hear which one you get!

  4. I'm in the same place...it's time for a grown-up camera since the iPhone is not cutting it anymore, but not too grown up that the camera intimidates me. I've been looking at that Samsung Galaxy (hello wi-fi - no more having to plug into a computer to save pictures, what a wonderful feature!) and one of the Canon Rebels. I'm looking forward to reading what people have to say!

  5. I have the Canon Rebel T3i and LOVE it! You don't have to learn all of the fancy options and buttons if you don't want, the automatic setting works great for basic shots. There are some priority modes that allow you to adjust only the aperture or shutter speed which work great for me. It is a little bulky but I don't mind most of the time since the photos are worth it.

  7. Honestly, if you don't feel like learning how to use the DSLR in any of the other modes or want to purchase additional lenses, then I would go with the point and shoot. I took a photography course and the instructor basically told us a DSLR on automatic is a 800 dollar point and shoot…and there is a reason why they include the basic lens in the package. I actually have both. Sometimes its easier…and a lot less heavy…to throw a point and shoot into my purse. Plus I really do believe that you can get good photographs from either camera, it has more to do with the photographer and how they compose the pic, etc than always having crazy expensive lenses and the newest camera body.

  10. I have the Canon Rebel and love it. It takes beautiful photographs. However, if you want something easy to use that you can carry with you, it's not what you're looking for. I took an 8 week photography class after I bought mine and still can only use the camera on semi-automatic settings. (No manual shooting for me!) It's also very delicate because of the lenses and needs to be packed well. You can't toss it in a diaper bag. I treat mine well and I've already broken a lens by an accidental drop. It also really requires some additional lenses to get the most out of a DSLR, so it's a much bigger investment than just the price of the camera. If you just want a nice camera to catch great pictures without acquiring a new hobby, I think a point and shoot is the way to go. Just my .02!

  11. We got a DSLR (Nikon D80) shortly after our son was born. It stayed on auto until I took an online class and now it's rarely ever in auto and was quite simple to do once I knew what I was doing. That being said, it is heavy and bulky! I knew it wasn't the camera I wanted to tote around Disney when we went a few years ago, so we upgraded our point and shoot and got a Canon S100. It takes great photos, but my one frustration with it vs. the DSLR is the delay. I miss quite a few action shots using the point and shoot. That being said, it is my go to camera unless I really feel like lugging the DSLR around. I recently read a great review of the Sony NEX-5TL. If I was in need of something new, I'd likely check this one out (but still might also want to take a quick class so you can get familiar with it). Good luck with your search.

  12. I have always had a Rebel and have always loved it. Great for good quality pictures but I don't use it on a daily basis anymore (you know, now that the kids are mobile!). I mostly use the 50mm lens with it (about $90). I stopped using a point and shoot when I got my iPhone and really have never needed one since I have both the iPhone and Rebel.

  13. I have the rebel and it takes great picture but it's huge and bulky. It's hard to bring in vacations because it takes up a ton of room in my suitcase or I have to carry it on in my purse. Same thigh for going out to dinners, etc....you will have to carry its brick with you.

I get over it because I love the pictures it takes but I will be getting a MUCH slimmer camera for the future

  14. Ahh! I can't wait to see what you get. I'm drooling for a new camera!
